Using A Mac - The Truth
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Tao and I have been a Windows support technician for over 14 years.
I have seen and worked with every iteration of the Windows software from its roots through to the latest (and greatest) versions of the desktop, mobile and server platforms.
And the truth? When I am not at work - I use a Mac!
Why? if I know Windows so well and can fix it with my eyes closed do I choose to run a Macbook notebook?
The easy answer is a bit of a cliche really - but it does just work. I can get my Macbook out of my bag and start it up within a minute and be on the internet within seconds.
No worries about the operating system doing any of the following:
- Re-detecting my hardware even though it is already installed
- Wanting to scan my hard disk for possible errors
- Forcing me to install unwanted updates
- Reminding me that I need to register something
- Slowly loading the icons into the System Tray area
Its as simple as that!
I am a strong believer in having dedicated hardware to perform with dedicated software.
In my years as a PC tech, it has become painfully apparent that Windows main issue is that it has to cover as many bases as possible. 1000s and 1000s of device drivers, all doing their own thing, written by different people, asking for different permissions and resources all at the same time. This is where Windows becomes slow and unmanageable.
When I first plugged in my Epson Scanner to my new Macbook I thought that it was not working as nothing happened. But when I looked in the Image Capture application I saw that the scanner had already been installed and identified correctly by the OS! Nothing was needed.
- No drivers.
- No installation screens.
- No wizards.
- No fuss.
It just worked.
Some suggest that using a Mac is only for people who are technical by nature - that is hogwash! Using a Mac is as simple as can be. It is more intuitive than a Windows or Linux machine and runs in a stable and consistent way.
My 8 year old child learned how to operate his old iMac within minutes! There is no learning curve. What you need to get to is there for you, not hidden away in the registry and INI files.
I may sound biased, but dealing with PCs each day, every day has made me this way.
My advice? If you want a machine that is no hassle and no fuss...
